Phase 3a. Participative Bonfire

PARTICIPATIVE BONFIRE

This project has as a main goal to reactivate an empty space, owned by the city of Alicante, with temporary uses and make it work as the heart of the three neighborhoods that are around it. By a previous analysis of the area, during phase 2, we understood the current situation of the area. The actual economic downturn and the mismanagement of public space by the city have left no choice to this place; it has to remain the way it is right now until possible to carry out projects for this space. But even if is not possible to build, we can give a temporary use to avoid the site to become a constant reminder of the current situation. The plot is going to turn into the container of the production of a participative bonfire. The bonfire as a main topic will allow us to involve community to build a new identity to the place bringing back to life the tradition of Alicante.

POTENTIAL & CONTROVERSIES

  1. Existing plot in the confluence of 3 neighborhoods as a common public space.

This is one of the most important potential that we found in the previous analysis of the current context of the area in phase 2. Its location within the area shows that this plot is in the heart of the triangle formed by these three neighborhoods. Furthermore, after studying different references in similar contexts, we can say that this plot has a strategic location in the neighborhood.

Presentación1

RELATED CONTROVERSIES

In the analysis we found several qualitative data that revealed a lack of social relation even if the whole area seems to be just a neighborhood, they are divided in three: Alipark, Princesa Mercedes and Francisco Albert. This is a social barrier that causes a fragmentation right now.

  1. Existing 3 bonfires in a small area.

In this area we can find three different bonfires. One per neighborhood. The bonfire culture is very strong in the city of Alicante because is the most important party of the year. The already tradition existing in the area will help us to develop a participative bonfire because they are already in contact with this culture,  and like this we are going to make them participate from the beginning in its construction

RELATED CONTROVERSIES

 Presentación1

The bonfire culture is present in the neighborhood since 1964, with the Francisco Albert Bonfire. Nowadays the percentage of participants in the bonfire festivity is just 0.9% of the residents of the area. This situation exists because to participate in a bonfire you need to pay, and right now, with the economic crisis, people are not able to contribute.

  1. A plot in an enclosed residential neighborhood.

This empty plot is located in a residential area, which can provide a use for all the neighborhoods within. The activities programed to happen in the plot will attract people from all ages. Besides, the area is well connected by car and train both with the city and the periphery.

 Presentación1

RELATED CONTROVERSIES

Because of these infrastructures (railway and avenues) surrounding the neighborhood it is enclosed in itself. Furthermore, the level crossing that connected the neighborhood with the north side of the city is closed, so no cars can cross the railway. That means lees outside people come to the neighborhood.

Also we find a lack of activity because there are any facilities within the neighborhood.

 1 STRATEGIES

AGENTS INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT

 AGENTES

STRTEGIES

  1. INVOLVE COMMUNITY.

Since the very beginning of the project is necessary to work hand to hand with the neighborhood, to involve them in the process. Starting by approaching to the local associations, which are the ones that represent the neighbors’ interests, to achieve the goal to transmit the message. Using a step by step approach to the real context, we are going to introduce the project to the community.

 bicicletica

First of all, we need to create awareness of the existing reality of an empty plot. To carry out this first action we are going to create a tool to explore the neighborhood and its inhabitants. Due to a previous qualitative and quantitative analysis of the current reality in phase 2 we found out that one of the existing traditions in the neighborhood are the bonfires, which nowadays are struggling to survive to the economic crisis.  This tradition is not only related to the neighborhood, but is known in the whole city as the most popular party of the year. One of the main goals is to use lyric, satire and criticism from the essence of the bonfires, based in the current issues from politics, cultural world, economy crisis… and comprising different scales from local to international. We are going to use this fact to build our tool to explore the neighborhood. It is a traveling device called “the traveling bonfire” which is going to tour the neighborhood through its nonexistent public places and its business to create a reaction to the unknown device.

The traveling bonfire is going to create activity around it because it will allow the citizens to propose their critics of the current situation of the neighborhood or the city, and propose it to be the main topic of the participative bonfire. The motto that is going to lead the bonfire’s develop. One of the proposals will be selected from a popular vote to become the main topic of the future participative bonfire.

This action will involve assemblies in different points of the neighborhood with the participation of the associations and citizens, and these actions will lead to finally decide the object critic of the participative bonfire which is going to be built by the neighbors themselves.

Once we have created the interest and involve in some level the citizens to be able to build the participative bonfire, we need to educate the participants with participative activities, in this case bonfire workshops.  The citizens are going to be the ones that build the bonfire, but not just a bonfire to burn old stuff, we are going to build a Foguera de Sant Joan. The San Juan’s bonfires are ephemeral monuments which are built by artisans to be burnt. The production of the bonfires is a complex process that involves creativity, construction, design…

The workshops will be a guided tour about the production process of the bonfire. This bonfire is not starting from zero. The volume will be consolidate before (structure and main elements). The rules for the game are going to be set from the beginning because it’s required previous knowledge to make the bonfire stable and efficient.  The workshop will involve the final appearance after the assembling of the different pieces.

The specialist will be in charge of teaching how to create the figures, which are going to be related to the motto of the bonfire. Each person who want to participate in the creation of the bonfire needs to think about which kind of piece want to design (depending on the size will take more time and effort, depending on the different interests and availability to participate in the workshops) and decide its personal critique. Each piece (ninot) is composed of the volume (character) and an explanatory table for the critique.

These workshops are not only for the neighborhood, but also to promote the traditional festivity. That’s why workshops are created for school trips also, to show children the artisan work and its creation. Thus, both schools in the neighborhood can participate: Jose Carlos Aguilera Primary School and Gabriel Miró Primary School.

Besides the professional foguerers, the workshops also will be in charge of the students of the “FP artista fallero y diseño de escenógrafía” taught in Las Lomas High School, which are the future of the profession. They can teach the participants of the workshops and also help in the production, as assistants. They can take this participation as a practice to apply their recent knowledge.

AGENTS

 strategy 1

Local associations:  Alipark, Francisco Albert AVV (in process of formation), Movimiento x Benalúa, El Templete: They intervene becoming the nexus between the neighborhood and the external agent that intervene. Their interest is to become reality what they are claiming for their neighborhood.

Local bonfire associations: They intervene as the representatives of the bonfires from the neighborhood. They have the interest of promote its activity and tradition in the neighborhood to keep it, and avoid to lose it.

Alicante City Council: Department of Urban Image: They lend the plot to the neighborhood and propose to fill it with temporary interventions while it’s empty.

Gremio de artistas constructores de hogueras de Alicante. They intervene as the knowledge holders of the traditional construction of bonfires. They are in charge of everything related to the bonfires going on in the city. Their interest is to show the real process of a bonfire production to understand the artisanal tradition and to advertise themselves.

Pupils from the FP artista fallero: They intervene as an active asset to help the participants to create their piece of art. They get practical knowledge about the specific world of bonfire production.

Primary Schools (Jose Carlos Aguilera Primary School and Gabriel Miró Primary School): through an interactive activity they intervene in the creation of a traditional monument of their city.

Neighbors from the specific area or the whole city: They are the main characters in this strategy, without the citizen participation this wouldn’t be possible. Their interest is to create their own public spaces and do not permit this space to be wasted as long as they can use it.

BENEFITS

Social. The involvement of the community in the activities to revitalize an empty plot and creates bounds between the neighbors.

Cultural. Revalorization of the bonfire culture, because of the involvement of the community in the construction process.

DIFFICULTIES

Economical. This strategy is fund by subsidies to encourage citizen participation, it depends on the budget of the city and it will not generate an important economic benefit. The benefits would be specially cultural and social.

Social. As always, not everybody will agree with this proposal, because they will think about the way we spend money, and not in the benefits that this initiative could generate in the neighborhood.

REFERENCES

-From my first reference: SUR LA PLACE PUBLIQUE by EXYZT, in phases 1 and 3 they use different strategies for involve the town into the process. In phase 1 they use the tradition of the town, such as bread ovens, typical from this place to create a traveling device, to move around the different public spaces existing and meanwhile create different activities to make people participate, from children to elder people. They use this strategy as a first approach to the people and politicians. After this intervention they gather all the material and make an exhibition to explain what was their commitment using the traveling oven.

In phase 3, the participants were invited to test new applications and improvements to exterior and interior public spaces of the building that was going to be demolished. This took place through furniture workshops coordinated by EXYZT, De l’aire and the local cultural center.

LAREDO FLOWER BATTLE. This is a popular and colective party from Laredo, Cantabria. Each chariot is built by a dozen of contributors that don’t need to be specialists. These people are organized around a core which is in charge of keep the work from year to year, they are called the “carrocistas”. They are those who conceive, design and direct the implementation of the floats-labor absorbing them all summer, taking care that the flower is ready for the big day, becoming the soul of each group and the live engine battle. Simple craftsmen erected in authentic artists. They are the directors of the chariot, meanwhile all the people who want to participate follow its orders to paint some parts of the chariot or decorate them with flowers.

laredo carrozas

                    2. BUILD AN IDENTITY.

Right now the neighborhood is dead because it has no activity of any kind, commercial or cultural. But also, the neighbors are not able to feel engaged to the neighborhood because of its identity, because it doesn’t exist. For these disseverments we are going to create an identity in the neighborhood, using as a basis the bonfire tradition, present in the whole city and known by all the citizens.

The bonfire tradition in Alicante, as we know it nowadays comes from the year 1928, and since then these traditions as being implementing in almost every neighborhood to celebrate the party with all the neighbors. But the current economic situation is not allowing everybody to become part of the celebration. A considerable amount of money is needed to participate, and almost the whole budget of the bonfire building comes from people’s donations.

Right now people are not able to contribute economically, that’S why we propose to use the bonfire tradition as the catalyst of the new activity to implement in the empty plot, by constructing a participative bonfire. To build an ephemeral monument creates a new image of a site, even if it is just temporary, and if it is created by the neighbors themselves, this is going to provide an emotional bound with the monument.

 2container scaffolding

But let’s no focus just on the final result, but in the process to provide the place a special character. The existing empty plot had as the last use a parking, that’s why it has asphalted floor, which can allow different activities. But to attract the attention it needs to have a formal identity, is not enough just the activity which is going to fill the container of the activity. One of the most economic and effective resource is the color painting. After providing the elements to configure the workshop space in the place, a final image of volumes is going to be already imposed, but the decoration of the place will be in charge of the participants, they are going to paint the scenario. We decided to use a color pallet based in the spirit of the bonfires, using as a reference common colors used in the Fogueres de Sant Joan posters. Using this colors we want to make people think about the fire, which is the element that is going to end the celebration, burning, in a metaphorical way, all the critics represented in the bonfire, to take them away and simulate a fresh starting.  And also the night, that is the scenario for this celebration. In this case not only the artefacts are going to be painted, also we are going to use the existing parking pavement marks to organize the space.

Alicante City Council: Department of Urban Image: They intervene with the intention of changing the image of this plot in particular, to give people a temporary public space.

Alicante City Council: Department of Culture: They intervene creating strategies to promote the local traditions of Alicante. They do it creating information campaigns to let people now the tradition from different points of view.

Local associations: They are going to intervene by coordinating the participatory activity. With this action they have the interest of appropriate of the space to create a public space for the neighborhood.

Neighbors from the specific area or the whole city: In collaboration with the designer and the local associations they are going to be in charge of give a formal identity to this empty plot. They are already using the space, and doing their thing in it, in both the space conditioning and the construction of the bonfire.

Material providers.

BENEFITS

Social. The involvement of the community in the activities in a physical way. Producing their own space to use it, and feel closer because it’s made by them.

Cultural. The bonfire culture as basis of the whole development to create a bound with the citizens

Economical. The self-production as a way to save money, using low cost strategies like painting.

                  3. SUSTAINABILITY AND REUSE AS A CONCEPTION ETHIC.

This project is conceived as a temporary intervention to give a use to an empty space. As it is going to be temporary, we need to be responsible with the resources and creating the least impact in an environmental way.  To create the workspace we are going to need a storage space and a workspace. Since the goal of this project is to build a participative bonfire, in this case we are going to use prefabricated pieces to be easily removable.

 1container scaffolding

The storage space will be used to keep the different element save from the outside dangers. We are going to use a shipping container to this function, basically because they are practical, easy to get and not very expensive. Its function is going to be simple but useful, because besides the storage function, it will be one of the elements to give identity to the plot.

To create the workspace, since we are not able to build nothing long-term, we are going to use a scaffolding structure. This system is going to help us to provide a structure to create a workspace in where we are going to organize the workshops. This space will be covered in order to avoid bad weather conditions. Furthermore, this is not going to be the only use of the scaffolding system. When we are ready to finally assemble all the elements of the bonfire, the scaffoldings are going to be used to the function that they were conceived for, to help the construction. Once the project would be finished this elements will be removed, and returned to their belonging places.

As we mentioned before, in the identity strategy, this are the structures that are going to be painted to give the formal identity to the place, by using colors related to the bonfire tradition.

Another important issue in this strategy is the kind of materials that are going to be used to build the participative bonfire. Lately this has been a controversy because, independently of the materials that we are using, the end of a bonfire is to be bunt. This action generates a combustion process that liberates CO2 to the atmosphere, contributing to the contamination. That’s why we need to be careful with the materials that we are using for the construction. Formerly the construction of a bonfire employed only natural materials, but it was very laborious process to create the different pieces. White Styrofoam was introduced to make the elaboration process easier, but at the same time is a petroleum based material and it contaminates. Or strategy will be to use the less of this material, and focusing in use reused or recycled wood as the main material, accompanied by other noble materials such as paper, paperboard… We will obtain the wood from different sources, from demolishment’s, to materials as furniture, pallets…

SOUTHWARK LIDO by EXYZT and Sara Muzio / London / 2008. Temporary scaffolding structure. As part of the 2008 London Festival of Architecture, an abandoned site in Southwark, South East London, was transformed into a temporary lido, equipped with a public outdoor paddling pool, sauna, sun deck, beach huts and bar. Inspired by the historical role of Roman and Turkish public bath houses as social meeting places for community engagement and relaxation, the Southwark Lido offered a “bathing and breathing space” for visitors in the middle of the city. Although the Lido provided a physical space, made with scaffoldings, for activities and leisure, the more important quality of the project was to activate discussions about public and empty space within the city.

LAREDO FLOWER BATTLE.  As I said before, this traditional party is a good reference, not just because is a typical party, but how is it organized. To allow the participation of the citizens one month before the celebration the city council provides scaffolding structure and a sailcloth to each chariot. They build their workspace in the street for a month, and the structure allows them to protect the structure from the bad weather.

BENEFITS

Cultural. The introduction to the citizens of this sustainability ethic to build projects.

Environmental. Efficient and responsible with the resources to create the lees impact possible. Awareness of the new reality, we need to take responsibility of our acts.

DIFFICULTIES

Economical. This kind of sustainability architecture is not always the cheapest to build non-impact projects

– Environmental. This project itself is going to be pollutant, but we need to reduce to the minimum the impact.

                  4. PARTICIPATION OF THE COMMERCE OF THE AREA AND CURATE ACTIVITIES

The forth strategy is related to the present situation of the business in the neighborhood. Right now, there is no future for small commerce in the site. We want to implement this strategy in a specific phase of the project. The goal of the project is to build a participative bonfire, to use the empty plot and obtain a social and cultural benefit. But once the monument is built, if we don’t program any other activity, the project is going to end there. In the moment when the bonfire is finished the action is going to move from the construction of the bonfire to the space that it creates around it.

 comerce

We are going to use this new scenario to create a retroactive relation between the interest that generates the bonfire as a monument for the city, and the interest of a different kind of commerce. This action will be focused in promoting different kinds of business of the area and what they offer, they are going to sell what makes them special. Their different offers can be from tastings, to fashion, handmade craft… In exchange for this opportunity the traders will pay a small amount for rent that is going to be intended to raise funds to finance the next bonfire, but only if they get any benefit. This is a way of not only depend on subsidies to finance the next participative bonfire. A store space will be provided to the traders.

But the bonfire not only generates a scenario for traders, it provides also a perfect context to curate different kinds of participative activities during the exhibition of the bonfire.  These activities are going to be curated by the associations in charge of the place.

BENEFITS

Cultural. The mixed uses would create a different range of interests but sharing a common axe that is the bonfire which though culture is able to gather people together.

Social.  This strategy leads to social interaction between the different participants: the visitors, the traders, the artists that created the monument…

Economical. The involvement of the commerce will create a small economic feedback in the economy of the neighborhood.

            5.  COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

 cartelito

This is one of the most important strategies to achieve the success of the project. We need to transmit people what we are about to do. In this project each phase is going together with a communication strategy. This project has the goal to encourage citizen participation, that’s why the scale of communication strategy is going to be local, for Alicante and its citizens, specially focusing in the neighborhood.

To sell the project we need to create an image of the site, which is configured by several spaces to allow the construction process. We can sell the idea of an empty space that it’s about to generate a new identity to the neighborhood.

We can use as a reference the communication strategy that EXYZT COLLECTIVE used in the project SÛR LA PLACE PUBLIQUE. The context was very similar to this one. They used printed posters and pamphlets to let people know about the actions, and inviting them to participate. Also they created the image that represented the project, and for the participants in the workshops and meetings they printed t-shirts for them, to create “the team”, to create a team atmosphere.

 place publique publiciad

Furthermore, we can use too some strategies used in the PROXY PROJECT communication strategies. In this case it is a bigger project, but it is interesting their campaign through the social media. The use platforms as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Yelp! This is very interesting because people who take part in the project can share their experiences through the network and it can spread. Also they keep a website of the place, as a blog, that let us follow all the process.

3 BENEFITS

FINANCING

The funding of this project is basically the subsides gave by the city council to encourage citizen participation. I based the budget in subsides conceived to neighborhood associations by the city council years ago. The total budget is around 3800€, divided in four phases.

In the first phase the budget will be 200€. We will use the money to pay for the advertisement of the event and to get the materials needed to achieve our goal. We will need a traveling device as a bike and a small trailer that we can lend.

The second phase will be one of the most important; we will set the working space. 1200€ will be provide to take care of the rent of the scaffolding structure and the container, and also the color paint.

In the third phase, to star the workshops we will have 1500€ to buy all the materials needed to build the bonfire.

Finally, in phase four we will have 900€ left to curate the activities that are going to take place around the bonfire, both commercial and cultural.

4 BUDGET

PHASES

 6PHASE 1

In phase 1, we will have the most complicated task, involve community. To reach our goal we are going to use strategies 1 and 5. First establishing contact with the local associations to know their concerns and to start organizing the first activity together. Before the participative bonfire is settled, we can work together with the other three existing bonfires in the neighborhood: Nou Alipark, Francisco Albert and Princesa Mercedes. Creating a common path with all the bonfires. We can work together to join the main topics of the four bonfires and relate them to create a tour within the neighborhood, and not 4 different objects.

With our device called “the traveling bonfire” we will claim for the empty space using the bonfire critical character to invite neighbors to propose a critical topic to develop for the bonfire, and inviting them to participate in the planning of the workshop space and the bonfire construction.

 7PHASE 2

The second phase involves the creation of the physical space composed by a shipping container as storage for the materials and scaffoldings to build the workspace for the workshops. Both materials are going to be rented or borrowed from different agents. The future bonfire space will remain empty until the construction starts, like in the strategy 3.

The neighbors are going to be in charge of give an image to the site, painting the structures with the bonfire typical colors, as I explained in strategy 2.

 8PHASE 3

The third phase involves the participative workshops that are going to be coordinated with professional bonfire builders in collaboration with the pupils from the FP bonfire builders. The bonfire is going to be designed already, with an assembly system to be easy to build for the neighbors. The neighbors will be in charge of given the final finished guided by the bonfire builders. The neighbors will be in charge of modeling de simple volumes and write their critics according to the main topic chosen for the participative bonfire.

The works are going to be developed in the scaffolding structure, and the materials are going to be stored in the shipping container, as explained in the second phase.

 9PHASE 4

After all the elaboration process, in phase four the assembly of the participative bonfire is going to be completed. Now, the bonfire is going to create a mixed-use activity around it involving cultural activities curated by local associations or the city council and the local commerce, as explained in strategy 4.

After the exhibition time the bonfire is going to be burned one day before of the official cremà, the night of the 23rd June. This is because we don’t want to create a conflict with the official bonfires, but we want to coexist in the ambience of the traditional party of the Hogueras de San Juan.

2.2 URBAN DESIGN – URBAN IMAGE

INTRODUCTION

The project starts out from the specific characteristics surrounding the empty plot located between the neighborhoods of Alipark, Francisco Albert and Princess Mercedes. The final image of this project is the result of having encouraged citizen participation in this area. This will be achieved by building a participatory bonfire for the neighborhood, for the reasons explained in part 2.1.

Since 1928, the traditional bonfires of Alicante have been built by an artisan, a professional bonfire builder. The artisan is in charge of coordinate all the phases of the bonfire, from the design to how is going to be burned. But our bonfire is going to be participative, so we need to have a previous design to be assembled from parts already designed. To be able to do this I’m going to use as a reference 3 children’s toys: LEGO, Meccano & Geomag. The three systems are based in the same principles: they have basic pieces, which can be assembled in different ways following the instructions to get different results from the same basic pieces.

LEGO is a construction toy consisting of plastic bricks and other standardized components that fit together with studs. The basic system consists of bricks of different sizes to build different items by inserting one brick in the other, following the instructions or using your imagination. To extend the possibilities LEGO has complementary sets as doors and windows, roofs and wheels. But there’s not scale limit with LEGO construction, from small pieces, to figure that can measure meters.

MECCANO is a model construction system. It consists of re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears, with nuts and bolts to connect the pieces. It enables the building of working models and mechanical devices. Each Meccano set has all the necessary pieces and the instructions to assemble it to get the final result.

GEOMAG is a toy construction system created in 1998, consisting primarily of nickel-plated steel balls (spheres) (12.7mm in diam) and short connecting sticks (27mm) with a magnet on each end (rods). With these two basic elements, a huge number of geometric shapes and structures can be built. Adding panels (triangle, diamond, square and pentagon) helps to form rigid structures. Geomag can be used also to make experiments with magnetism and moving structures.
