Phase 3a: SHARE INFORMATION BIKE

I propose replacing the current bike sharing system for a new one. With this people would buy bicycles and would share them with others in exchange for a small profit. This bike would have three main items:

 

bike lock– The main function of this bike lock is to park the bike anywhere in the street. By controlling this lock through the phone, there is no need to carry any keys on. The control lock right through an application makes it possible to share the bike with any friend who needs it.

 

front hub– This box contains sensors that continuously collect information from the environment surrounding the cyclist, the personal riding habits, GPS, and a small motor that powers all these sensors and front-light bike.

The rider can know how much effort he is putting in and how much calories he is burning.

The information collected about pollution of CO2, NOx and noise is published on the council website.

rear hub– Inside this hub there is a similar motor to the KERS. This motor captures the energy dissipated while cycling and braking and saves it when the rider needs a bit of a boost.  Thanks to this, people who have difficulty in riding up the streets with big slopes could do it without problems.

ANALYSIS F SIMILAR SYSTEM

Talking about the bike sharing system that already exist (I have used the system of Barcelona). This system is not cheap at all. Adding all holding costs: installation, exploitation and the cost of personnel, it cost about 18.000.000€/year is approximately 3.000€/bike. Where town hall pays much of the cost.

All bike sharing systems are similar in cost. I will apply the average cost of the bike sharing system in Alicante.

Applying these data the bike sharing system in Alicante costs about € 900,000 . Where city council pays much of the cost .

-All this is being done with the intention to improve the environment and reduce car use . But is not cheap at all.

STEP1.

In the system I propose the council would make an initial investment to purchase the SIB bicycles.  When making a new system, get financial aid from IVACE. ¿Who is IVACE?

IVACE provides grants for projects already carried out or to be carried out in the future, for promoting the use of bicycles in the town, such as: state of infrastructure (bike lanes, signage …), awareness campaigns towards cycling, informing citizens about sustainable mobility related, event (day of cycling, photography contests …), design of promotional materials (t-shirts, hats …), driver education (courses, workshops news informational flow regulation and ordinances …) flyers, web page creation, revision and drafting of regulations governing the movement of the bicycle in the town, support modal interchange between public transport and cycling. etc.

The bikes would be sold at half price to all those who want to buy it. When selling bikes the council gets half the money invested. Finally the council only spent 50.000€ at the beginning.

Users who buy the bike can share with others who need it. In exchange, the owners would get a small bonus so that over a few years these people could recover all the money invested in the bike. This bonus would depend on the hours of shared bike ( 1euro/2hours ). In addition users who do not have own bike should pay 20 euros as annual fee.

 

ECONOMIC BALANCE.

-To demonstrate the performance of the system I have focused on the existing bike sharing system  of Alicante (ALABICI). This system has 300 bikes and about 473 users who subscribe and use this type of bike .

BAROMETER

According to the annual barometer of GESOP halftime of cycling is about 45min/day. So if 473 users use the bikes 45min/day, at the end of the years gets approximately 130,000 hours. Paying 1€/2hours the council would have to pay € 65,000 annually. Part of this money is recovered by the annual payment of those without a purchased bike ( which are simply users). These users would pay 20€/year. In our case with 473 people recover € 9,440 . Where upon the final expenditure would be € 55,165 , which is more than 5 times cheaper than the current system of compartmentalization.

Both users and the owners have to care of bikes that are not yours as much as possible. Any damage by the users will be charged a fine of € 1-1000 depending on the severity of that damage.

 

ADVANTAGES.

The city council spends less money in the bike sharing system.

The city council obtains pollution maps of the city in real time. (CO2 , NOx, noise , humidity … ) With these maps could be watched as performs the improvement of the environment of the city.

The users get the money paid for the bike in about 3 years and for the next few years could save up for the next bike .

The users does not have to worry that if partitioning points are full or are vacuous. They could park their bike anywhere and find a bike with the application when they need it and where they need it .

The users get the information from the exercises along the path travelled by bike .

The users could go up hills without difficulty thanks to built-in wheel motor.

One of the goals would be to reduce car use and encourage the use of bicy

One of the goals would be to reduce car use and encourage the use of bicycles. According IVACE with only the implantation of bike sharing system containing 100 bikes reduce 148 tons pf CO2 in a year.
