- THE I-CONE STRATEGY:
The strategy consists on strengthen the identity of Carolinas Bajas through the hybridization of the most representative elements of the Net+ work (described in Phase 3a).
Carolinas Bajas has got two main ICONS: The Bonfire of Carolinas Bajas , which is the most important association of the neighborhood and the production Net+work of shops. So, the I – cone project consist on linking both in order to re-activate the neighborhood beyond the creation of a new image and new identity based on tradition and on the future premises.
The idea of linking the Bonfire and the commerce is based on the initiative of the Bonfire of Séneca-Estación de autobuses .This bonfire has an agreement between both in order to have feed-back in their role in their neighborhood.
- The LOGO:
The first step followed to create this link consisted on creating a logo , an ICON for those ICONS. The logo is composed by three colors , each of them correspond with each component of the Net+work (DIY-wshops, Re-bargains, Dining Net). The colors were chosen using principles of the psychology of color and of the shape so each color represents the nature of each type of local. The triangle represents the bonfire and the unity. For creating this logo it was used as a reference the “Welo identity” design an interface that won the price for one of the best graphic designs of 2013. The colors of this logo are present in all the phases.
- PHASE 1: Re- activate the intersection:
This phase consist in activating the intersection , as described in phase 3a is an strategic point in order to catch the attention of people due to, its visibility , is an repeated element in the urban context and the presence of most of the locals in its corners. Also, the validity of the intersection has been tested jet due to, the celebrations of the bonfire, which usually are in the intersections.
For the re-activation of the intersection there were contemplated many versions , first of all, taking as point of depart the scaffolding and the second one , who answers to the i-cone strategy with the cone as an identity element.
Phase 1 – Scaffolding´s versions (no i-cone network project)
The scaffoldings were chosen due to their capability for creating big scenarios and flexibility. The first attempts were made to combine many recycled elements in the installation.
In the next scheme there is a representation of the ways of invading the intersection that were managed in this first approach and its conditions:
Using the same strategy of combining all the elements as in “ the platform” a cross system was created in order to combine the traffic and the event.

The last proposal ,with metallic was the bird nest, it was a proposal which explored a level of complexity that did not evidenced the scaffolding square geometry. Using as a reference the chain link green project. The constructive system of it is based on metallic bars from fences that are only cut , the installation is made with an angle of 45 degrees so its system is easy to build.
Phase 1 (The i- cone project)- Traffic cones
The first model designed is the cone´s canopy based in one reference of The Parking Day and another art installation of the artist Thomas Heatherwick in the Victoria – Albert Museum.
-The cones canopy
The canopy is an element that gives shadow and at the same time creates an space. The cones are disposed with a net structure based on the Parking´s day project, very easy to build once the system is placed, so we can build it with the help of the neighbours. The cones have got a painting treatment trying to draw grids. In order to create also furniture with identity , tables and chairs are painted with the three colors or tablecloths are used.
>With the combination of various is possible to generate an event.
-The cones stand
The disposition of the cones allows creating two type of furniture. One that allows sitting and another one creating a bar. Also de colors treatment is present. The totem has an illumination system based on the board of “ La noche en Blanco” of Zuloark.
>The main idea was creating an element that could be easily identified by the users , showy and radical , with an unique element that gives identity. The cone also is an element that could be easy to obtain, low weight and versatile.
- PHASE 2- Urban Furniture and empty commerce painting:
After re-activating the intersection, these installations are easy to disassemble by the neighbors. So, the next intervention proposed was re-activating the nearby streets. From these cones neighbors can build different types of urban furniture as the following. The furniture will be disposed in relation with the open commerce, in pedestrian sidewalks …
Also, the neighbors will be in charge of generating a new urban image by the idea of re-using the existent facades of abandoned commerce as a branding element using painting.
The design proposed is inspired in the urban artist 1100d well-known for its urban interventions. The work of this artist is based on geometrical motifs and painting for specific elements of commerce such us security fences.
- PHASE 3 Shop fronts renewal:
This phase is based on the shop front renewal in Carolinas Bajas, each commerce of each type of the net-work will have a new identity. This new elements will be built with wood panels or conglomerate as a base, and painting will be the way of generating them with the help of templates for drawing. Some workshops will be settle out in order to build them in collaboration with the neigbors.
The main references are the Bricko toy project and the Guide of shopfronts of a neighborhood of London. In England most of the neighborhoods and villages have got their own laws for the shop fronts image.
This design could be defined in terms of sustainability:
The design is based on low-cost interventions, with low-cost materials, such as re-using traffic cones, re-using scaffoldings… Also, these elements are re-used in the different project´s phases.The ways to assemble the elements are affordable for the participation of the neighbours .The main aim is following this criteria: a minimal intervention for a maximum benefit.This design will re-activate the economy of Carolinas Bajas, re-activating its commerce tissue and streets. Also the design is divided in different phases so that it could be reasonable to measure the economical and social efforts of the agents in a period of time.
The design is divided in different phases in order to make the participation of the agents increase by the implementation of the strategies for capting their attention. The design method has been elaborated as simple as possible in order to, allow the participation of the neighbours in the construction phases and allow their expression and implement their relationships.
This design project is based on references that will implement the culture of Carolinas Bajas. The design makes valuable the presence of different types of production Net-works (described in phase 3a) such as crafts movements or DIY and artistic expressions on facade-painting and the Bonfire´s developement.
The design is made of re-used elements. The strategies are created in order to improve the quality of the public space, such as, pedestrian sidewalks, intersections, shopfronts… These new elements also have a critical dimension: criticize the predominance of the car in Carolinas Bajas Neighbourhood and creates new designs which reclaim the priority of the street-life.
