Trash Gallery is a project in the Market Square (25 of May Square) in Alicante that creates a temporary pavillion in which Art and Trash are combined in order to get a solution for the accumulation of the trash that appear during the tardeo time on the Saturday’s middays.
There are two main concepts that are combined in order to create a project that manage properly the waste produced and create a rappresentative space as a symbol of it.
_TRASH is the main problem the project has to solve and all the project revolve arround it turning also as a constructive element that develop an awarness task, generating the visible part of the intervention.
_ART is one of the incentives that is given as a reward for a suitable behaviour, rappresenting an attractive approaching that helps to encourage people to recycle.
WHAT IS TRASH GALLERY?
Central Market TRASH GALLERY is a waste management project that works on the trash originated in the 25 of May square during the “tardeo” time.
The proposal is set as a trash exchange between the users and the association of the market stands in a symbolic space generated in the square defined as an art gallery.
Glass bottles, cardboard trays and metallic cans composed the trash involved in the project. The exchange is encouraged by an incentives system based on offer benefits to the people who recycle most. At the same time related to the amount of recycling is set a competition between the association members that should motivate their consumers to recycling in order they raise in the competition and obtaining benefits from it.
In the end there is a cardboard furniture that complement the proposal, offering the users comfort to develop their activity in the “tardeo” and an advertising space for the association and the supporters of the project.
Users: People that participate in the “tardeo” drinking and having their meals in the square. They contribute to the project by recycling their waste and obtain benefits from it. Also they could use the furniture designed and enjoy with the increase of the social relations created.
Workers: People in charge of the organization, management and service of the Trash Gallery. They are part of the association and are the link between the users and the association giving information and making the trash exchange.
_Market Stands: take part of the association that organize the project and contribute with a fee for each bottle sold to finance it. Also offer benefits for the users in exchange of their recycling managed by the trash bar. They obtain announcement and the possibility of increase their sales by working together.
_Bars: collaborate in the collecting task providing their waiters to help in the cleanliness of the square. Their work help to generate a cleaner space that benefit there image and make more comfortable the square for their clients.
_Recycling Company: is in charge of buying all the waste generated in the “tardeo” in order to finance the project. They take the waste after the activity ends and pay for it obtaining economical profit for it works.
_University of Alicante: Participate with the contribution of the students that develop de project and the professor that coordinate it. It interests is educative and to collaborate in the improvement of the city and its society.
_Alicante City Council: Initially was the promoter of the intervention and now have to drive the initiative helping with the starting invest and implicate in the promotion of the association in order to get the benefit of making a cleaner market square and contributing with the benefits that the project implies in their different categories.
_Aguas de Alicante: Offer the water that is necessary for the cleaning of the beer bottles. They obtain announcement by helping to obtain an environmental benefit.
_Alhambra Beers (Beer Company): Alhambra Beers is in charge of the bought of their empty bottles; they pay for them and sponsor the activity by including announcements in the tardeo. They could use the pavilion for its activities or advertising campaigns.
_Smurfit Kappa (Cardboard Company): The cardboard company contribute with the cardboard that is needed for construct the furniture. These elements will contain advertising of the company that every Saturday must be shown.
01. Creation of a stands association.
The association is in charge of the project. They have benefits and duties for participate in the activity and they coordinate the suitable development of it.
02. Collecting of the bottles, cleaning and assembly in sub-phases of the TRASH BAR.
Mainly, the raw material of the gallery is the own waste produced in the Saturday mornings in the square. It’s necessary to do a selection and choose the green bottles of Alhambra 1925 which are the most consumed and sold mainly in the market stands. The Selected bottles must be collected and cleaned of the rests of the beer they have in order to precede to the assembly of the TRASH GALLERY.
03. Establishment the incentives system for the trash exchange.
There would be an incentives system for the trash exchange, in order to make the people participate and encourage them to recycle their waste through benefits they obtain when they participate in the exchange. On the other hand, these benefits are related to the market stand where people buy the beers, so people will return there and buy more, establishing a fair competition between markets stands.
04. Inclusion of the advertising in the cardboard tables.
The next step is including advertising and information in the cardboard furniture. They will show advertising about own cardboard company or other sponsors. In addition, people will find the information about the incentives they could get in trash gallery if they take part in the exchange.
05. Waste collecting and sale: collecting the rest of the waste to self-finance the project.
After the trash gallery construction, all the waste collected is sold in order to self-financing the project: glass, cardboard or paper and cans, are produced and collected in big quantities and exchanged for money…
06. Rent the cardboard tables for their use during the “tardeo”.
To help to self-financing the project, the cardboard furniture will be rent during the activity, but people could have some money back if they recycle and take the tables back.
07. Promotion and development of the association.
Finally, the money obtained with the waste sale will be invested in promotion and development of the association.
The first step is create the association of the market sellers that include all the stands involved in the tardeo activity that want to participate in the project.
The idea is make that the stands that sell the products consumed in the square and produce the waste that are left there collaborate to solve the problem and take some benefits from their collaboration when the users recycle.
There are set some rights and duties established in order to guarantee a suitable competition between the different traders and benefits according to the participants that make their customers recycle more.
As duties there are set a minimum price for the products they sell (as an example 1€ in the beer bottles), pay a fee per each bottle and tray they sell and offer discounts and promotions as recycling incentives.
In the rights section they will be rewarded with the possibility of put their advertisings in the square to attract possible purchasers, to receive part of the invest the association do with the money the get from the sale of the trash and participation in the incentive to sale campaigns developed in collaboration with the city council.
The idea of the Trash Gallery Pavilion is make visible the project and create an attractor as a reference point to take all the trash produced in a totally recyclable way, thinking in leave any waste when the project ends.
The pavilion will be constructed with the same trash the project is collecting and there are set 6 phases that actually operate together while the project has been developed.
First, it is necessary to collect some bottles for the pavilion. The trash collecting is something that continue always because the trash never ends; what changes is the destiny of that trash that sometimes is sold and others actuate as raw material.
For the pavilion it is necessary to clean the bottles in order to eliminate the smell that produce the rests of the beer in the bottles destined to the gallery construction; the rest of the trash just will be storage and sold.
Another step is providing the users the information required to get their waste promoting the project. This phase will be developed by including advertising in the furniture that will appear on the square and with an information campaign the first weekends in which the project run.
While the trash has been collected, the wooden layers that contain the bottles are being cut and perforated to being carried every Saturday. Then in the square the bottles and de boards will be assembled making the pavilion grow and showing the participants how their waste could create something useful and attractive.
The exchange is the last step but also the starting point because during the whole process trash has been collected and users are receiving something for their participative behaviour.
The Trash Gallery will be located in front of the market, and between the underground access, the bars and the flowers stands.
The place is set because is close to the “tardeo” activity in order to have small distances to recycle but creating flows that cross the square form the purchasing points to the recycling space.
I want to create with the gallery a landmark that take the benefit of the sensations that the light and flowers produce, according to the recycling spirit that the project develops.
As has been said, the trash exchange is the main activity of the project and as a result of this action the Trash Gallery is created.
The pavilion is set as an addition of states that offer to the users different situations they could enjoy and complement the tardeo activity. Growing along the weekends with the waste there is collected.
The first state make a bench that set the final size of the gallery, the three first layers that the users could use to seat or leave their meals and bottles compose it.
After some weeks collection the bench turns partially into a table. Now the shape is set and the exchange point is visible to the users in order they take their waste.
The next phase is the bar, defined by a closed space that maintain some areas from the previous phases creating an space that could be used in many different ways.
With the last layers that compose the walls of the gallery, art is inserted in the exchange space, offering an extra incentive to the users in order to encourage them to recycling and giving an extra activity that could complement the actions developed in the square after the Saturdays.
The last state is the gallery; this state represents the end of the pavilion construction and defines the inner space that combines art and trash to give the whole service proposed.
The Trash Gallery pavilion create an internal space in which the trash and art are shown at the same level, combining the concepts exposed in the beginning and generating a relation and exposition space. The exchange is also carried out inside the gallery making the people enter in the space and putting all the trash together in the same space.
Surrounding it, the gallery creates with its shape table and sitting areas that help the tardeo users to develop their activity and creates a direct relation between the gallery and what its function.
The whole gallery is composed by glass green bottles that filtrate the light creating an atmosphere related to the trash in a kind of an educative strategy in which trash is changed, shown and create the space all at the same time.
From the ceiling the bottles are holding from a transparent board that let the light enter and complete a sort of lighthouse during the night. But also the pictures are holding as the bottles trying to put art and trash at the same level.
CONSTRUCTION & APPEARANCE
The structural system of the gallery is which gives it their shape and final appearance. Bottles inserted in boards that contain them compose the structure and the contact between the bottlenecks and the bases of the bottles that are below guarantee that the different layers do not move horizontally.
Holes are previously made on the boards and then bottles are inserted in the square. When one layer is completely filled the next board is put over it and the process continue.
The project is self-financed with the benefit obtained from the trash sale and the collaborations through the advertisings.
It is necessary to make an initial invest for the first wooden layers that will start to contain the bottles for the pavilion. From the start-up of the project the organization is getting money from 4 sources:
_ The fee with the association contribute from the sale of the drinks and meal.
_ The money obtained from the trash sale.
_ Money from the advertising included in the furniture and the trash gallery.
_ The benefits from the furniture renting.
There is also new cardboard furniture designed for the “tardeo” activity in order to offer to their participants some elements to make more comfortable their time in the square.
This furniture achieve three main objectives that are: Serve as seats and tables to use in the square, show advertising of the activity and their promoters and collaborators and stimulate the interactions between the tardeo participants with a colour code to let the users know their interests to meet people.
The characteristics having in mind for the furniture design are: They could be seat or table according to their height, made in cardboard because there is the same material of the waste produced, is cheap, recycled and recyclable, re-usable, light, foldable and with an easily assemblage to make easy to use and transport.
Furniture appears with a renting system in which some money is given to obtain the furniture and a part of it is returned. This idea is also affected by the incentives system that offers furniture as a reward for recycling.
_Economycal: Spending just the money got from the own project and obtaining some benefits that are invested another time in the people that are making the project possible. Deciding a low cost construction that uses the waste to get it possible.
_Social: Inciting the relations between the different agents involved in the project and also between the users. Using the art and the trash gallery to encourage people to start relations by using the waste.
_Environmental: Spending just the money got from the own project and obtaining some benefits that are invested another time in the people that are making the project possible. Deciding a low cost construction that uses the waste to get it possible.
