INTRODUCTION


LOGO AND DIFUSION OF THE ACTIVITIES
It has already been mentioned in the previous phase that the project must start with the creation of a logo that speaks for itself – one that expresses the idea clearly and presents the activity to the general public in a way which will raise public awareness and stimulate involvement. High priority is placed on that because the way the project was supposed to be popularized initially is most likely to turn out insufficient, due to it static character.
In order to make the idea reach more people and raise sufficient awareness, in addition to what has been commented in the previous phases, brochures will be developed, the design of which will be made in collaboration with students from the schools in the area. The main goal is to expand the range of the campaign and to provide more profound information, which will lead to the involvement of not only locals, but also people living outside the neighborhood.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES


If in Phase 3A the emphasis was on justifying conjunction and perfection of the case studied, its positive aspects on a social, cultural, economic and environmental level, the strategies to be taken for implementation and development, in this part the focus is on demonstrating and proving the diversity and complexity of all processes behind the design of the project.
Because of that we will begin by pointing out the main objective of the applied design/ the design used – giving new image to the neighborhood of Nou Alacant and fortifying its identity through establishing links between different social groups and [RE]Art Alicante, where the roundabout serves as instrument for cultural stimulation, by hosting installations and expositions of recycle art.

SUMMARY


In the previous phases have been analyzed all characteristics of the neighborhood – its strengths and flaws. We have also analyzed the modification of the roundabout and how this place, with its special characteristics, in its own unique way, has the potential to turn into an emblematic symbol – place for art recycling, which has the power to gather the inhabitants of the area around, for one cause.

The project [RE]Art Alicante consists of the installation of three interventions for recycling with the corresponding expositions of pieces of art for each one of them, created at the workshops by children and adults.
This way, we are no longer focused only on giving new image to the zone, but also raising awareness and promoting environmental education by teaching the new generations to respect the world they live in and have higher appreciation for everything that surrounds them.

 

AGENTS


[RE]Art Alicante
A non-profit organization will be crated under the name of [RE]Art Alicante and will be the main organization in charge of the realization of the project. Its main objectives will be to promote the creative recycling, organizing workshops, expositions, etc. In the organization will participate plastic artists, designers, craftsmen, and theorists in the field of recycled art, that have practical experience in the area. Awareness-raising campaigns focused on environmental issues and saving of potentially useful materials will be carried out on a regular basis.

Association AVV “Nou Alacant” – the most important collaborator in the project
The main objectives ahead of the neighborhood organization will be to manage and control the cultural and the social development and growth of the children and the youngsters living in the district by the means of creating different workshops. It’s worth mentioning, that even though these activities are aimed primarily at the young ones, people of all ages are more than welcome to participate. These events will be a place, where people that share the same interests and affections are gathered by their drive to contribute and give real meaning to their spare time. Another task of the organization of the neighbors will be to broadcast and spread information about every upcoming event.

Council of Education and Culture of Alicante
Is presented by a group of people that will carry out a series of complementary educational activities intended to meet the necessities of the citizens and the aspirations of the neighborhood community

The University of Alicante
Will be in charge of organizing a joint project between the specialists in the design field from the Polytechnic school and commercial organizations, located in the neighborhood.

The environmental council of Alicante
Is the main agent controlling the environmental and cleaning related processes taking place in the public space as part of the current project.

Colleges near by the neighborhood of Nou Alacant
All colleges are going to participate in the workshops in order to for the main goals of the project to be achieved: by giving a direct example, to encourage the young ones to start working on their own personal creations. By constructing a set of sculptures of small size, the little ones are not only going to adopt the right attitude of respect towards the environment but also popularize the ecological and the conservation approach.

Commerce
For them we have planned workshop with educational purpose, aiming at giving them more knowledge in the field of interior design and alternative ideas on how to transform furniture and recyclable materials into something new that will serve a purpose.

Hospital
A special workshop will be held, for children and grown-ups that are hospitalized, where they will be preparing sculptures in the form of play, using disposable materials from the hospital itself.
This will help patients not only to get used to the hospital environment and make their stay more comfortable and bearable, but also to learn more about the contemporary art, by enjoying the creation and the contemplation of their own pieces of art, and at the same time – being socially active and appreciating the process of sharing knowledge with others.
 
 

REACTIVATIÓN AND NEW DESIGN


The process of reactivation of the phases consists of implementing the strategies proposed in phase 3A. The interior designs of the roundabout will be related to the theme for every workshop. Because of that there will be 3 main designs underlying:

During the course of exploration, in search of something beyond the obvious for the designs proposed, we were looking for that specific component, something about the roundabout that made is special in its own unique way, so we can use it as starting point for giving identity to the same and by this to the entire neighborhood – something that the proposal for the previous phase of the project was lacking. This way we re-discovered the fountain situated in the heart of the roundabout.
As one of the main ideas is the artistic transformation of recyclable materials the new design will be related to an “abstract fountain” where water splashes are represented by recyclable materials undergoing changes and turning into pieces of art.
By the time that water “splashes” reach the ground, they will suffer drastic and unexpected change which in this case is representing hundreds of works of art emerging from the source (the fountain) and turning into that great mass of art. And this is the symbol that will become the emblematic for the roundabout and the one that will give new image and identity to the entire area around.
In this birth of artefacts is contained the complexity of the design, as it encompasses the various relationships between project objectives (promote environmental, sociocultural and economic culture) and different designs, made from the same neighborhood residents. This way we can get the variety of design proposals.

In other hand, we wanted to approach the idea of a fountain and what that could mean and how it might be related to the way we consume water, so with the future design we wanted to make emphasis also on this aspect. We want to say that water is necessary for life, and in its merely ornamental use in fountains, we could invent a substitute with the same characteristic, bit with beneficial environmental caracteristics.
The project is meant to draw attention to water use and the environmental issues, and the goal is to criticize the decrepit state of the city’s fountains, most of which, are not working.

The new design solutions we are looking for, have to be corresponding to a more complex reality than the one presented in Phase 3A. The decisions taken during Phase 3A turned out to be not sufficient to create identity for the neighborhood of Nou Alacant and make it stand out.

INTRO DESIGN


The design of the roundabout takes into account several references, which will be explained further on, and also focuses on some characteristic parameters of roundabouts (traffic , visual , etc.), depending on the requirements of each activity that is to be held there.
It has also been taken into account that the budget is limited. Because of that for the project and for the construction of all installations will be used reused recyclable paper, plastic, aluminum, and all types of wood-derived waste and/or furniture.
 

THE ROUNDABOUT PROPERTIES


The surface of the roundabout is 2230m2, but for safety reasons 1421m2 will be used – sufficient for the development of the different activities within it. The existing interior space consists of several green zones with a fountain in the center (which is going to be the main protagonist in the design process), and in its northeastern site is crossed by line 2 of the TRAM. Factors such as the TRAM line, are responsible for the reduction of the area of action.
Model
Access to the roundabout is already provided by the existing pedestrian passage controlled by traffic lights, allowing pedestrians to cross without problems. On the other hand, we have to isolate the environment with a perimeter of protection that will separate people from the road traffic around them.

 

DESIGN OF EACH WORKSHOP


The building structure and the interior spaces for each proposal are planted to be developed by the people attending the art workshops. This is the reason why the modular panels system is tough, made ​​entirely of recyclable materials, but still easy to manage – even by one or two people. Before or after the placement of each panel, the artefacts made in the workshop will be incorporated. The result is an abstract expository of contemporary art made ​​by micro artefacts from recycled materials.
Each thematic workshop will last (two months). During that one month different artefacts can be created and by the time they are placed little by little, the structure itself will emerge and different interior spaces will be created. Thus, the artistic works can be developed and gradually presented to the public.
The remaining two weeks of the period for each workshop will be devoted to exhibition of the works, to the public. Meanwhile, next workshop will be started, overlapping exposition and educational artistic creation “in situ”. Thus, people coming to see the exhibition, can learn more about the way the previous participants worked and the methods used in the workshops to create the art currently exposed.

PROJECT BENEFITS


Environmental

The most important benefit is the one that comes from the process of recycling itself. The recycling contributes to the great reduction of primary raw materials used in the manufacturing process and by this saving our planet’s natural resources.
By reducing the green areas the high water consumption will be lowered and thus, later on, smaller amounts will be necessary for the watering process.

Economic
The economic benefits are mainly based on the reduced expenses for obtaining raw materials, later on involved in the manufacturing process. In simple words – by reutilizing, the production of new items will not only require less money and will result in reduction of the total costs of the manufacturing process but will also spare the natural resources of our planet and lower the energy consumption.
On the other hand, will be achieved reduction in the public expenses for maintaining this particular area. The money that will be raised from sales of objects that went through a “makeover” and obtained a new life, or pieces of art created by recyclable material, will be later on put into the organization of new workshops throughout the entire year, the specific designs required for each one of them, the expositions held, etc.

Social-Cultural
The socio-cultural benefits are centered around the encouragement of the personal development of the citizens, in particular – the young ones. The search for new aesthetic solutions using recyclable materials, not only develops and unfolds the creativity of the participants, but also encourages them to look for new materials that may find their new purpose in form of art. This way, step by step, is cultivated the attitude of respect and appreciation towards the environment and everything in the world that surrounds us.
