The participative bonfire is an expression tool to allow participants to show to the City what are they concern about in their neighborhood.
Since the beginning of the Fogueres de Sant Joan tradition in 1928, the bonfire monument had the same objective that these monuments have nowadays: a scathing and eloquent criticism.
Each district plans its bonfire around the problems and deficiencies that affect it; transport, electricity, sewerage as the more frequent criticisms in the years 20-30.
The treatment given to the subject is the irony, aware of the transience and insignificance of the bonfire, cannot focus on more than joke or criticism, being impossible to propose a solution to the problem.
To follow this philosophy our goal is to allow the neighbors to express themselves regarding the current situation of their neighborhood.
To chose the main features concerning the neighborhood we take into consideration the analysis made in phase 2. These are the concepts that are going to be reflected in the bonfire:
ISOLATION: The neighborhood is isolated from the rest of Alicante because of the physical barriers that surrounds it.
ABANDONMENT·DIRT: For a long time, The abandonment of this neighborhood comes reflected by the deterioration of the public spaces due to the dirt that acumulates in the public spaces.
FRAGMENTATION: Understood as an emotional division of the 2 existing neighborhoods: Alipark and Princesa Mercedes-San Fernando; actually conceived as 3: Alipark, Princesa Mercedes and Francisco Albert.
We are going to represent each concept in a figurative way using these references:
– Colour · transparent
– Shape · bubble, capsule
Dirt as rubbish.
Dirt represented with waste.
-Colour · thematized
– Material · classified waste (plastic, fabric, organic…)
– Shape · pile of dirt
Fragmentation of the neighborhood.
Breaking into fragments.
– Shape · broken shapeless pieces
To materialize these conceps, we are using this system of layered forms built from small objects hanging from above:
We chose this system because allow us to represent different forms at the same time and let us make changes in the final shape progressively.
This is the way that we adapt our concept references to this representation system, we use always materials that can be burn:
General scheme of the bonfire as the addition of the three concepts represented at the same time:
To allow participants express themselves, we use a balance because its a mechanism that let us show the opinions by the different weight of the different balances and also it’s related to the justice concept.
We chose this reference of the Emotional Balance by Nadine Fumiko because this allow us use as many balances as we want and conect them to another mechanism that will be in charge to move the whole bonfire.
Here we represent three balances, each one for each of our concepts: isolation, abandonment and fragmentation. This kind of balance works with a counterweight that will move when the participants put some weight in the balance, to express their concern about a specific concept.
To figure out how to build this system we use as a reference one of the projects of Reuben Margolin and we adapt the geometry to our needs.
Thought the highest part of the structure we carry all the strings to the edge and join all of them together to the counterweight. Like this we get the movement that we need. Each group of strings work in differents planes to avoid the obstruction of the path of the others.
In the drawings below, we show some hypothetical scenarios to illustrate few possible cases but there are endless possibilities.
SOME PROBLEMS OF THE PROPOSAL
With this system of representation by hanging little objects, exists a problem with the wind, thats why we propose to tie the higher and lower point to the structure in order to prevent this problem.
Also we propose an alternative way to build the supporting structure hiding the support inside the bonfire.
We made a model of a 1/4 of the total project as a test of the mechanism of the balance and the real movement that we show below.
(We took into consideration the correction of the last submission the changes are still to be made).
For the first campaign we made posters:
We use two references with the intention to create spectation around the project without showing the final form.
The first LEGO campaign is called Build it, and it shows the context making you guess which object this pieces are representing.
The second is also a LEGO campaign called Imagine, and uses this colours and line drawing to represent the context to make you guess which animal is represented.
Here are two versions of our advertising campaign, using our references. Using the characteristic pieces of our bonfire but without showing the final result to create expectation because the poster invites you to build your OWN bonfire.
For the second campaign we made a video.
We chose as a reference the movie trailer from 3D Flames. They show in a short time the experience after the “cremà” using testimonies of the participants. Here the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwZyF6XgJoE
